Fingerprint attendance has one failure mode no amount of tuning fixes: a dirty finger cannot be read. In a workshop that is not the exception, it is every shift. Grease from an engine bay, cement dust, metal filings, cutting oil, paint, flour in a bakery. The finger that enrolled clean on day one is unreadable by 08:00 on a working day.

The ZKTeco BioFace A1 is built for exactly this. The worker touches nothing. Here is what it does, and, honestly, where it stops.

Why fingerprints fail in a workshop

This is a different problem from the worn fingerprints you get on a long-serving construction crew. This is contamination, and it is daily.

A fingerprint sensor reads the fine ridge detail on the fingertip. A film of grease flattens that detail. A layer of dust blanks it. Wet hands scatter it. So the worker wipes on a trouser leg, tries again, holds up the three people behind him, and eventually a supervisor edits the missed punch by hand later. Every one of those manual edits is a hole in the payroll audit trail, and on a 40-person workshop there are a lot of them by month end.

Touchless face recognition, from up to two metres

The BioFace A1 leads with visible-light facial authentication. The worker walks up, the unit reads the face in under 0.35 seconds, from anywhere between 30 cm and 2 metres. Hands never enter the transaction. Greasy, gloved, wet, or full of a toolbox, it makes no difference.

Two things make this trustworthy rather than a gimmick:

  • Anti-spoofing. A WDR binocular camera and the ZKFace V4.0 algorithm reject printed photos and phone-screen videos, so nobody clocks a colleague in from the car park. The false acceptance rate is rated at 0.01% or lower for face.
  • Speed at the door. Under half a second per person clears a shift change without a queue forming at a single door.

There is a hygiene bonus too. Nobody presses a shared sensor with an oily thumb, which matters in food-prep workshops and kitchens.

Built for the environment, with one honest caveat

The A1 carries an IP65 rating: dust-tight, and sealed against water jets. A floor wash-down, airborne grinding dust, or the occasional splash will not kill it. That is a specification, not a "weatherproof" marketing word.

The honest caveat is temperature. The unit's operating range is -5°C to 45°C. In a UAE summer, a wall in direct sun runs well past that. So mount the BioFace A1 under cover: just inside the workshop door, or on a shaded unit entrance, not bolted to a bare west-facing outer wall in July. For a fully exposed, sun-baked outdoor gate, a different terminal is the right tool, and we will say so rather than sell you the wrong box.

Keep the fingerprint and card as backup, not primary

The A1 is multi-biometric on purpose. It still has an in-glass fingerprint sensor (Z-ID), RFID card reading (125 kHz ID and 13.56 MHz IC), and a PIN keypad. The trick in a workshop is the order you use them in.

Set face as primary. Set card as the realistic backup, because a card in a pocket clears the edge cases in half a second with no supervisor override: a welder in a full mask, a worker whose face is bandaged, someone the camera cannot get an angle on. Fingerprint then sits as a third option, useful mainly for the office and stores staff who share the same unit and keep their hands clean.

It is also the door, not only the clock

The BioFace A1 is an access control terminal, not just an attendance recorder. It drives an electric lock and reads an exit button and a door sensor, over Wiegand or RS485. So the same box that records the punch also unlocks the workshop door. One unit, one cable run, one thing to maintain.

It also has an SIP video intercom (version 2.0) and ONVIF support. A delivery driver or visitor at the workshop door can call, and reception sees live video and buzzes them in. That is genuinely useful where the workshop entrance doubles as the goods entrance.

Capacity, and the software that pays you back

On the unit: 6,000 users, 3,000 faces, 6,000 cards, and 150,000 stored transactions. That comfortably covers a single workshop or a small factory floor. If you are larger, the number that binds first is faces at 3,000, so check it against your real headcount before you order.

The terminal is only half the system. It reports into ZKBio Time or ZKBio CVAccess on-premise, or ZKBio Zlink in the cloud with a web portal and mobile app. That is where raw punches become a WPS-ready payroll file with UAE overtime multipliers and Ramadan hours applied automatically. A terminal without that software is an expensive door chime.

Where the BioFace A1 is the right call

It fits when:

  • The door is a covered workshop, garage, or factory-floor entrance, indoors or in shade.
  • Your workforce has dirty or gloved hands for most of the shift.
  • You are running up to a few thousand staff at that door.
  • You want attendance and door access from one unit.

It is the wrong call for a fully exposed outdoor gate cooking in direct summer sun, or a gate that needs half-second palm throughput for 50 workers stepping off a bus at once. That is palm-recognition and rugged-outdoor territory, and we would quote a ProFace X for it instead.
